3D Printed Christmas Lanterns: One Frame, Swappable Plates, and How to Light Them Safely
Print the frame once, then slide in a new set of glowing Christmas scenes every week of December. Here is what it takes, and how to light it safely.
A lit lantern in a dark window does more Christmas work than almost anything else you can print. It reads from across the street, it looks good on a fair table, and a lantern with swappable plates gives you a new scene for every week of December without printing a whole new lantern. This guide covers how our lantern frame and decorative plates work, how long each piece takes, how to get the plates to glow, and how to light the whole thing safely.
Everything here is live on our designs page. Each design downloads as a print-ready 3MF project (plate, colors and settings already saved in Bambu Studio) plus STL files for any other slicer. New to 3MF files? Our plain-English guide to 3MF files explains what you're opening.
What is a 3D printed lantern with swappable plates?
It's two things that work together: a lantern frame you print once, and decorative plates (we call them panels on the model pages) that slide into its sides. Each set has four plates, one per side, and each plate is a flat scene: a thin light-colored backing with raised black artwork on top. Put a battery LED light inside and the backing glows while the artwork stays dark, like a paper-cut silhouette.
The Modular Lantern Frame is the frame, the roof and a carry handle. It stands about 30 cm (296 mm) tall with the handle up and about 14 cm across. The plates slide down grooves in the frame, so changing a scene takes about a minute. The roof slides on and locks with a press-and-slide latch, with no screws, clips or glue, and the handle prints already attached to the roof.
The point of the design is that the frame is the slow part and the plates are the quick part. You do the long print once, then every new set of four scenes is a single short print.
Which Christmas plate sets fit the frame?
Five Christmas sets are live today, and every one fits the same frame. Each set is four plates, 90 × 120 mm each, printed together on one plate in Bambu Studio.
- Silent Night: Santa's sleigh across a full moon, a snowman in falling snow, a snowy village with its church, and a Christmas tree with presents.
- Candy Cane Lane: a gingerbread house with a picket fence, crossed candy canes and peppermints, gingerbread friends holding hands, and a candy-cane lamppost.
- Holy Night: the nativity under the star, the three wise men on camels, an angel over the shepherds, and shepherds with their sheep.
- Nutcracker Suite: a nutcracker by the tree, a ballerina in the snowflakes, the Mouse King, and marching toy soldiers.
- North Pole: Santa's workshop, his sleigh and reindeer, Santa at the chimney, and a pile of toys.
Because they all share one frame, you can also mix them: two sides from Silent Night and two from North Pole is a perfectly good lantern.
How long does a 3D printed lantern take to print?
About a day for the first lantern, then about four hours for each new set of scenes. Here are the numbers from the saved projects. Times and filament are Bambu Studio's estimates on a Bambu Lab P2S with PLA, so your printer may run a little faster or slower.
| Design | What prints | Print time | Filament | Colors | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modular Lantern Frame | Frame + roof with handle (2 prints) | 18 h 10 min | 361 g | 1 | $2.49 |
| Silent Night plates | 4 plates, one plate | 3 h 53 min | 71 g | 2 | $3.79 |
| Candy Cane Lane plates | 4 plates, one plate | 4 h 37 min | 71 g | 2 | $3.79 |
| Holy Night plates | 4 plates, one plate | 3 h 50 min | 71 g | 2 | $3.79 |
| Nutcracker Suite plates | 4 plates, one plate | 4 h 04 min | 70 g | 2 | $3.79 |
| North Pole plates | 4 plates, one plate | 3 h 55 min | 71 g | 2 | $3.79 |
So a complete lantern, the frame plus one set of plates, is about 22 hours and roughly 432 g of filament, and the two files cost $6.28 together.
Here's the number we like best. All five Christmas plate sets together, 20 scenes in all, take 20 hours 19 minutes and 354 g of filament. That's about the same filament as the frame on its own (361 g). One frame and a drawer of plates gets you a different lantern every few days from now to New Year's, for roughly the plastic of two frames.

When should you start printing Christmas lanterns?
Start the frame first and start it early. At 18 hours it's an overnight-plus job, so it's the one to get out of the way in October. The plates are short enough to slot in between other prints.
If you plan to sell lanterns at a holiday fair, count backwards. Each complete lantern is about a day of printer time, so ten lanterns is ten days before you've printed anything else. A common fair setup is one lit display lantern on the table with sets of plates stacked beside it, so buyers can see the glow and pick their scenes.
How do you make the plates glow?
The plates print flat, backing down, in two colors: the backing first, then black for the raised artwork from the fourth layer up. Two things decide how good the glow looks.
- The backing filament. A translucent PLA glows best. The model pages suggest warm yellow, blue, red or white for the backing; any light color works, and warm yellow gives the classic candlelit look.
- Keep it thin. The backing is only three layers (0.6 mm) on purpose, so light comes through. Don't add layers or scale the plates up. Keep the scale at 100% or they won't fit the frame's grooves.
You don't need an AMS (Bambu Lab's automatic filament switcher) for the plates. The colors change between layers, not within one, so a single filament change works. With an AMS the printer switches to black on its own. Without one, the color change happens at a pause: printing from the STL, add a filament change after layer 3 (0.60 mm), swap to black, and carry on. Our Christmas 3D prints guide sorts every Christmas design by whether it needs an AMS.
Want each side a different color? The plates also come as single files, so you can print them one at a time, each with its own backing color.
The frame is one color, any color you like. Black makes the scenes pop; the product photos also show it in gold, ivory and red.
Can you put a candle in a 3D printed lantern?
No. Use battery LED lights only: a battery tealight or a small battery LED light set in the middle of the base. This is the one rule in this guide that isn't a matter of taste.
PLA, the plastic most people print with, starts going soft at roughly 55 to 65 °C, its glass transition temperature, and it can sag under its own weight a little below that. A candle flame is far hotter than that, and the air above it is too. A lantern is a small box with a roof on it, so the heat has nowhere to go. A candle would warp the roof and plates long before anything caught fire, and you don't want to find out what happens after that.
The fire-safety people agree. The US Fire Administration, passing on NFPA figures, reports an average of 20 home candle fires a day, and both organizations suggest battery-operated flameless candles instead. A battery tealight stays cool, can't tip over and light anything, and looks almost the same through a glowing plate.

A few more habits keep a PLA lantern looking right all season:
- Keep it out of the heat. Not on a radiator, a heating vent, a stovetop or a sunny dashboard. A south-facing window in full sun can get warm behind the glass too.
- Indoors only. The frame and plates are designed as indoor decorations.
- Support the base when you carry it. The handle is fine for moving it a short way, but hold the bottom for anything longer.
- No hot bulbs. Old incandescent bulbs and halogen lights run hot. LEDs only.
How do you put a 3D printed lantern together?
There's nothing to glue or screw. Once the parts are printed and cooled:
- Clean up the frame and roof. Remove the supports from the frame channels, the roof hooks, the release tab and around the handle, then clear any strings.
- Free the handle. Support the hinge ears and gently rock the handle until it swings. It's already attached, so there's no axle to fit. Don't force a stuck joint.
- Slide in the plates. One plate down each groove, artwork facing out. Seat them fully, but don't force them.
- Add the light. A battery LED tealight or similar in the middle of the base.
- Lock the roof. Set it on the rails a little to the right of center, press the thumb pad down, slide it left to center and let go. To open it again, press the thumb pad and slide it right.
The START_HERE guide in each download has the same steps, plus the exact roof offset and print notes.
What else can you 3D print that glows for Christmas?
If you like the lantern idea but want something smaller, our Village Tealight Houses are four snowy houses (a cottage, a church, a shop and a gingerbread house), each with a lift-off snow roof over a battery LED tealight. They print in one color each with no AMS, and the set of four takes about 10 hours 46 minutes and 300 g. They sit nicely next to a lantern on a mantel.
Can you sell 3D printed lanterns?
Yes, with our designs. The 3MF Labs license lets you sell the physical prints you make, lanterns and plates included, with no limit and no royalty. You can't share, upload, resell or give away the files themselves. Our guide to selling 3D prints covers the rest.

How long does it take to 3D print a lantern?
About a day for the first one. Our Modular Lantern Frame takes 18 h 10 min and 361 g of PLA, and each set of four Christmas plates adds 3 h 50 min to 4 h 37 min and about 71 g, Bambu Studio estimates on a Bambu Lab P2S.
Can you put a candle in a 3D printed lantern?
No. Use battery LED lights only. PLA starts to soften at roughly 55 to 65 °C, and a candle flame and the air above it are far hotter, especially under a roof. Battery tealights stay cool and still make the plates glow.
What light goes inside a 3D printed lantern?
A battery LED tealight or a small battery LED light set in the middle of the base. Avoid incandescent or halogen bulbs, which run hot, and never use a real flame.
Do I need an AMS to print lantern plates?
No. The plates change from the backing color to black between layers, so one filament change after layer 3 (0.60 mm) is enough. With an AMS the printer switches by itself. The frame prints in one color.
What filament makes lantern plates glow best?
A translucent PLA in a light color for the backing. Warm yellow gives a candlelit look; blue, red or white also work. The backing is only three layers thick so light comes through, so keep the scale at 100%.
Do the Christmas plate sets fit the same lantern frame?
Yes. All five Christmas sets (Silent Night, Candy Cane Lane, Holy Night, Nutcracker Suite and North Pole) fit the Modular Lantern Frame, and you can mix plates from different sets on one lantern.
How big is the 3D printed lantern?
The Modular Lantern Frame is about 136 × 141 × 296 mm with the handle up, roughly 30 cm tall. Each plate is 90 × 120 mm.
Can I sell the lanterns I print?
Yes, with our designs. The 3MF Labs license lets you sell the physical prints you make, frames and plates included, with no limit and no royalty. You cannot share, upload, resell or give away the files.
