A 3D-printed articulated octopus in coral pink lying on a light oak desk: a round head with big engraved eyes and a smile, and eight chunky sectioned tentacles spread out like a star, each ending in a curl, near white seashells, a jar of sea glass and a potted succulent by a sunny window.

01About

A chunky, cute octopus about 21 cm (8 in) across and 5 cm tall: a round head with big engraved eyes, a little smile and a raised cheek, and eight thick round tentacles that curl up at the tips. Each tentacle bends side to side at six hidden joints, so it wiggles like the real thing.

It prints in place, lying flat, already joined, so there's nothing to put together and no glue. It prints in one color with no supports and fits a 256 x 256 mm plate.

It comes as a Bambu Studio project for a P2S and as STL. The license lets you sell the octopuses you make.

  1. Open the 3MF in Bambu Studio

Open it as a project (File, then Open Project). The printer, plate and settings are already saved, so there's nothing to set up. Printing on another brand? Use the STL files with the settings below.

  2. Load your filament

    One color:

    • OctopusCoral pink
  3. Print

Print it once at 100% scale, lying flat as supplied, with supports off. Watch the first layer under the head and tentacles.

Keep the scale at 100% (shrinking it closes up the joints), leave every section where it is and print by layer, not by object. Use elephant-foot compensation, keep cooling on and don't add supports between the moving sections.

Printing on another printer or slicer? See the settings

The 3MF project has these settings saved for a Bambu Lab P2S. Using the STL on another printer? These are the settings it was made with.

03What to print

1 octopus. Print 01 once for a complete octopus:

About 5 h 33 min and 124 g. Pick one format, the 3MF or the STL, not both.

04Getting it moving

  1. Print it

Print the 01 plate once, at 100% scale, lying flat as supplied. Watch the first layer under the head and tentacles.

  2. Let it cool

Let the plate cool completely, then flex it gently and lift the octopus with its underside supported, not by a tentacle tip.

  3. Loosen the joints

Hold two neighboring sections and wiggle them gently side to side, working out from the head to each curl, until every joint moves.

These are sideways joints: keep the tentacles near a flat surface, and don't pull sections apart, twist them upward or force a curl back into the body. Stiff joints usually loosen with more gentle wiggling; check your flow and first layer before reprinting. Keep PLA away from heat, and keep small or broken parts away from young children and pets.
