Will It Fit? A1 Mini Build Volume and How to Check a File Before You Print
The A1 mini is easy to love and easy to outgrow on the odd big print. Here is its real print size, a two-minute fit check, and what to do when a part is too big.
The A1 mini is the printer a lot of people start with, and a lot of people will find under the tree this year. It is small, quiet and easy to set up. The one thing it can't do is print anything big, so the most common question after "how do I open this file?" is "will this fit on my printer?"
This guide gives you the A1 mini's real print size, a two-minute way to check any file before you buy or print it, and what to do when a part is too big. The examples are our own designs, measured from the STL files in each download, so you can see where the line actually falls.

What is the A1 mini's build volume?
Bambu Lab lists the A1 mini's build volume as 180 × 180 × 180 mm: 180 mm wide, 180 mm deep and 180 mm tall. That is about 7.1 inches each way. "Build volume" just means the biggest box a single print can fill.
For comparison, Bambu's larger printers, such as the A1 and the P2S, print up to 256 × 256 × 256 mm. That sounds like a small difference, but the A1 mini's plate has about half the floor space (32,400 square millimetres against 65,536). Anything over 180 mm in any direction won't print in one piece on the mini, however you turn it on its side.
What is the A1 mini bed size?
The bed, or build plate, is the flat sheet the print sticks to. On the A1 mini it is a square plate with a usable print area of 180 × 180 mm.
Height is the other limit. The nozzle can rise 180 mm above the plate, so a tall, thin part such as a tree topper or a figure has to stay under 180 mm tall too.
How do I check if a file will fit before I print it?
You don't need to measure anything by hand. Bambu Studio, the free slicer that comes with your printer, tells you the size of every part and shows it on a picture of your plate.
- Read the product page first. Most good listings give the size of the finished print. On our pages it is in the description: the Remote Holder, for example, is about 159 × 145 × 110 mm. If every number is under 180, you are almost certainly fine.
- Open the file in Bambu Studio and pick A1 mini as your printer. Choose your printer in the printer box at the top left. The plate on screen changes to the A1 mini's 180 mm square.
- Look at the plate. A part that is too big hangs over the edge of the square. Bambu Studio flags it and won't slice that plate until the part is fully inside.
- Check the exact size. Click the part, then press S (or click the scale tool in the top toolbar). The size boxes show its width, depth and height in millimetres.
- Slice it. If the plate slices and the preview looks right, the printer can make it.

What fits on an A1 mini? Real sizes from our designs
We measured the biggest single part in a range of our downloads. These are the real sizes from the STL files, not estimates. The "room to spare" column is how far the part is from the 180 mm limit in its largest direction.
| Design | Biggest part (mm) | A1 mini? | Room to spare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gingerbread Tealight House | 100 × 87 × 120 (walls) | Fits | 60 mm |
| Christmas Stocking Holders | 90 × 100 × 153 (tree base) | Fits | 27 mm |
| Remote Holder | 159 × 145 × 110 | Fits | 21 mm |
| Modular Lantern Frame | 136 × 141 × 160 (roof and handle) | Fits | 20 mm |
| Castle Dice Tower | 95 × 156 × 166 | Fits | 14 mm |
| Angel Tree Topper | 75 × 75 × 170 (body) | Fits | 10 mm |
| Santa Sleigh Candy Dish | 172 × 103 × 97 | Fits | 8 mm |
| Articulated Cat | 177 × 56 × 61 | Fits | 3 mm |
| Christmas Four-in-a-Row | 182 × 187 × 13 (cover) | No | 7 mm over |
| Christmas Tic-Tac-Toe | 193 × 193 × 26 (board) | No | 13 mm over |
| Christmas Tree Marble Run | 194 × 194 × 84 (base) | No | 14 mm over |
| Advent Calendar | 200 × 204 × 45 (tree cabinet) | No | 24 mm over |
| Articulated Octopus | 211 × 211 × 49 | No | 31 mm over |
A few things stand out. Most small gifts and decor fit with room to spare: earrings, flat ornaments, clickers, spinners and keychains are all around 100 mm or smaller. Tall pieces are fine as long as they stay under 180 mm, which is why the 170 mm angel fits. And "almost" doesn't count: the Four-in-a-Row cover is only 7 mm too deep, but it still won't go on the plate.
The Articulated Cat is the closest call in our list, at 177 mm long. It fits, but with 3 mm to spare there is no room for a brim (an extra ring of plastic around the base to help it stick), so keep the plate clean.
The part fits, but the plate doesn't: what then?
This is the most common surprise. Our 3MF projects are set up in Bambu Studio on a 256 mm plate (a P2S), because that is the printer we test on. A project often lays several parts out on one big plate to save you time. Each part may fit an A1 mini on its own, but the whole layout doesn't.
Take the Christmas lantern plates. Each decorative plate is 90 × 120 mm, so one fits easily. All four laid out together take about 186 × 246 mm, which is too much for the mini. The fix is simple: print them two at a time. The Modular Lantern Frame is the same story in reverse: it is a tall-looking lantern, 296 mm with the handle up, but it prints as two parts, the frame at 144 mm tall and the roof and handle at 160 mm, and both fit.
When you switch a project to the A1 mini in Bambu Studio:
- Parts that no longer fit on the plate show outside it.
- Add a new plate (the plus icon above the plate list) and drag the extra parts onto it.
- Or select everything and use Arrange (press A), which packs parts onto as few plates as it can.
- Check that each plate keeps the right filament colors before you slice.
Your colors and settings stay with each part when you move it, which is one of the reasons a 3MF project is easier to work with than a loose STL.

Can I just scale a model down to fit my A1 mini?
Sometimes, but be careful. Scaling shrinks everything, including the parts that have to match something real.
- Decor and solid shapes usually scale fine. A candy dish at 90% is still a candy dish, just smaller.
- Anything that fits something else doesn't. A stocking holder hook, a tealight house sized around a 38 mm tealight, a card holder sized to a business card or a game sized to its pieces will stop fitting if you shrink it.
- Print-in-place and flexi models should never be scaled. Their joints rely on tiny gaps of air, and shrinking the model shrinks the gaps until they fuse. Our guide to print-in-place prints explains why. That is why the Articulated Octopus, at 211 mm, is a no for the A1 mini rather than "print it at 85%".
If you do scale, use the scale tool in Bambu Studio, keep the lock on so all three sizes change together, and read the design's notes first.
Can I rotate a long part to fit diagonally?
A long, thin part can sometimes fit corner to corner, because the diagonal of a 180 mm square is about 254 mm. It only works for narrow pieces. Our Folding Laptop Stand, for example, folds into a bar 220 mm long and 28 mm wide: too long for the plate straight on, but on paper it fits turned 45 degrees, with about 5 mm to spare.
On paper isn't the same as on the plate, so let the slicer decide. Rotate the part (press R, or use the rotate tool), drop it on the plate, and if Bambu Studio slices it without a warning, it fits. Wide parts like a game board or a big bowl won't fit diagonally, because the corners of the plate run out first.
What's the best filament for a Bambu A1 mini?
Plain PLA. It is cheap, easy, comes in every color and is what most designs, including nearly all of ours, are set up for. Bambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as suited to the A1 mini, and does not recommend ABS, ASA, PC or nylon. Those need a closed, warm printer, and the A1 mini is open on all sides.
For things you plan to sell at a fair, a matte or silk PLA in a strong color does more for the look of a print than any material upgrade. If you want two or more colors without swapping spools by hand, see our guide to whether you need an AMS.
Is the A1 mini big enough, or should I get a bigger printer?
For most beginners and most fair sellers, it is big enough. The things that sell well in person, such as ornaments, earrings, keychains, fidgets, small flexis and tealight houses, are small and quick. A 180 mm plate also fills up faster, so you spend less time waiting for one huge print.
The mini starts to feel small if you want to make big pieces in one go: large bowls, game boards, marble runs, or long flexi animals. If that is most of what you want to print, a 256 mm printer is worth the extra space. If it is a few items now and then, check each file before you buy it and you'll rarely be caught out.
What comes with a 3MF Labs design?
Every 3MF Labs design downloads with a print-ready 3MF project (plates, colors and settings saved in Bambu Studio), STL files of every part for any other slicer, a START_HERE guide with plain-English print notes, and a license that lets you sell the physical prints you make, with no limit and no royalty. The product page gives the print's size, so you can check it against your A1 mini before you buy. More questions are answered in our FAQ, and if you are curious how 3MF and STL files differ, see STL vs 3MF.

What is the build volume of the Bambu A1 mini?
180 × 180 × 180 mm, which is about 7.1 inches wide, deep and tall. Any single part has to stay under 180 mm in every direction to print in one piece.
What is the A1 mini bed size?
The usable print area on the A1 mini's plate is 180 × 180 mm. The larger A1 and P2S print up to 256 × 256 mm, roughly twice the floor space.
How do I know if a model will fit my A1 mini?
Check the size on the product page, then open the file in Bambu Studio with A1 mini chosen as your printer. A part that is too big hangs over the plate edge and the plate won't slice. Select the part and press S to see its exact size in millimetres.
Can I print a 3MF made for a bigger Bambu printer on an A1 mini?
Usually, yes. Open it, switch the printer to A1 mini, and move any parts that fall off the plate onto a new plate, or use Arrange. Colors and settings stay with each part. It only fails if a single part is over 180 mm.
Can I scale a model down to fit the A1 mini?
Decor and solid shapes usually scale fine. Don't scale parts that must fit something, like a hook, a tealight or a game piece, and never scale print-in-place or flexi models, because their joint gaps shrink and fuse.
Can I fit a longer part diagonally on the A1 mini?
Sometimes. The diagonal of the 180 mm plate is about 254 mm, so a long, narrow part can fit corner to corner. Rotate it 45 degrees in Bambu Studio and let the slicer confirm it is fully on the plate.
What is the best filament for the Bambu A1 mini?
Plain PLA for almost everything. Bambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as suited to the A1 mini and does not recommend ABS, ASA, PC or nylon, which need an enclosed printer.
Is the A1 mini big enough to make things to sell?
For most fair items, yes. Ornaments, earrings, keychains, fidgets and tealight houses are small and quick. It feels small for big bowls, game boards, marble runs and long flexi animals.
